Pattern for Crochet Shell/Tassel Hat

Shell w/Tassel Crochet Hat Pattern by Margaret Alia Denny (aka The Divine Ms.M)

I saw this wonderful hat on another website & looked all over for the pattern. Margaret was kind enough to break it down & write it up for me.

To give you a bit of a start on it, the stitch is a shell stitch, and it's crocheted in a tube from the bottom up. Chain a multiple of 6 + 3 stitches, turn.

Row 1. 4 dc in 6th stitch from hook, sk 2 ch, sl st in next ch. *sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next chain, sk 2 ch, sl st in next chain.* repeat between * to end of chain, connect the chain into a loop, and that's the base of your hat. Don't turn your work any more from this point on.

Row 2. Change colors, and ch 3 (replaces 1 dc), 2 dc in slip stitch at join. *sl st in top of shell, 5 dc in next sl st* repeat between * around, and put 2 more dc in that first sl st.

Row 3. Change colors, ch 3, 4 dc in next sl st. *sl st in top of shell, 5 dc in next sl st.* repeat between * around, sl st into first stitch of round.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 till the hat is tall enough, then just sc the top closed across the shells you just finished. Add tassels.
