Hmm...Wanna Guess Who Had a Hard Day?

Not a single tear, no whining, no complaints, as a matter of fact...we had to REMIND them to give us a kiss as we dropped them off at their first day of preschool today!! Being the cautious mommy that I am, I packed their backpacks with TWO sets of clothes this morning and I'm happy to report that BOTH sets came back (yes, mom, we told our teacher we needed to go potty). HOORAY!!

Okay, so I will admit, I'm SUPER proud of them...and I'll also admit that both DrillSgt. and I had a hard time with it all today. We both complained of feeling nauseous, of tightness in our chests, and of slightly watery eyes (which magically disappeared as soon as we walked in to pick them up). We wondered if we should call and check in on them, we had a difficult time knowing what to do without them (let's just say the laundry basket is finally empty), and the house was so quiet I had to turn on the music. We said we'd pick them up at 4pm and then ended up getting there at 3:30 (it's just down the street from our house---LOL!!) I'm seriously glad that they handled it well, and I'm really happy that we started a few weeks early and I didn't have to worry about their first day at preschool AND my first day back at work.

Secretly, I'm also happy that they were both ready to come home too!

LongRifle said, "Come on mom, let's go home!"

Update...Sorry...

So sorry I've neglected you all. Here's the lowdown since my last post...

Potty training is going VERY well. LongRifle took to it quickly and has done EXTREMELY well (minus an accident here and there---but few and far between). Pistol has taken a little longer, and for awhile we seemed to be headed in reverse with those Pull-ups, so Grammy gave me the suggestion of going COLD turkey on the pull-ups when out and about, and wouldn't you know, IT WORKED!! She's had an almost SPOTLESS record this week! HOORAY!!

I turned 39 at the end of last month, I don't feel any older and made the mistake of telling someone I was still 38 (not on purpose I just don't think this year's birthday really registered).

We took Da'Gorgeouses to Sea World and had a WONDERFUL time!

Da'Gorgeouses just finished their 2 weeks of swimming lessons & they're signed up for 2 more!

They start preschool on Monday *sniff, sniff*

We went camping with DrillSgt's family for TWO nights and had a BLAST!!

I signed my official contract this week and know WHERE I'll be at and that I'll be teaching science (I just don't know what courses exactly and what grade levels exactly---the school is 7-12).

Hope you are all having a busy, wonderful summer too!

More to follow...

In Case You Were Wondering...

She did make it ALL the way up. Only I had to put my camera down and head over there (just in case) because my heart wouldn't stop trying to beat itself right out of my chest, my stomach was doing flip-flops and I won't even tell you what else was happening to me as I watched her attempt all of these! LOL!!

Goodbye 2, HELLO 3!!

Da'Gorgeouses turn THREE on Friday. Our house has been a hustle and a bustle trying to get ready for the BIG Princess party on Saturday. The cake is ordered, the bounce house is hopefully showing up, we have borrowed tables and chairs, the meat/chips/drinks and favors are purchased, and invitations were sent out a month ago. I'm almost finished with their birthday outfits & if I have a chance I'll take & post a pic soon!

We've invited family and a few of Da'Gorgeouses close friends (who by the way are all over 30---can anyone explain to me why that is?). Their BEST friends are coming too, did I mention that they're in their 80's?! So as we say goodbye to the "terrible twos" we welcome the "trying threes" (TIMES TWO remember?) with open arms--LOL!!

So CELEBRATE with me, the joy of having TWO wonderfully amazing, super funny, super smart, silly, beautiful girls!

My Future Photographers

I think because I always have my camera within arms reach these days, Da'Gorgeouses are becoming very interested in taking pictures of their own. They're really good about not touching "mommy's camera" but they have started to walk around framing things with their fingers, stopping to say "say cheese" and making a clicking sound. Last night DrillSgt. used their inhaler boxes to cut a hole through so that they could have their very own camera. They LOVED it! Pistol even took a close look and noticed the box had a small orange square on it and said, "this is the button you push right here!" They had fun running around, asking us to pose and then they'd say, "okay, it's ready, mail for you!" Too cute! DrillSgt. of course was super impressed at their top-notch business skills stating, "WOW! That's ingenious, split-second turn around is sure to keep the clientele happy." LOL!!

We had a family date night tonight. It was a pleasant dinner and Da'Gorgeouses had loads of fun sporting their new "Hollywood" sunglasses!

I Guess They're Ready!

Took Da'Gorgeouses to group today. Gosh, they really love going to group. Funny thing is, as much time as they spend with all of us adults, they don't even mind that I just walk in and leave them. It's supposed to be getting them ready for preschool, but I think it's more to help us mamás get ready to leave them!

Marisa & the others said they did very well. MaryAnn commented how she was making shaved ice and told the group of kiddos, "Look it's snow!" Without skipping a beat she said LongRifle looked at her and said, "That's not snow, it's ICE!" LOL!! Marisa also said that during circle time when they are all supposed to be sitting down, LongRifle got up and stood. She said Pistol looked over at her and said, "Sit down Sissy!" Oh gosh, maybe they're more ready for preschool than I thought!

M-365 : 20

20

LongRifle was feeling better today but I didn't want to take her to the library and risk possibly exposing anyone else. So Grammy came over and to celebrate the inauguration of our 44th President "The ROCK" Obama as Da'Gorgeouses call him, she took us out to breakfast. After that we headed out to the discount bakery store and bought a couple of loaves of bread to take to the park and feed the ducks. Da'Gorgeouses remembered their last experience of feeding the ducks and LongRifle made sure to say, "Mommy, those ducks were like Olivia, they needed a time-out!" Yep, that's right LongRifle, those pushy ducks needed a time-out last time, but they must have been super full today as they were all well behaved. So we headed to the playground, where I took a bunch of blurry photos as I'm having trouble with all of the action shots.

There were two I did like though, and this one won for today. Although their faces are somewhat blurry, and my mom's feet are being hidden by my added text, it shows what I love the most about Da'Gorgeouses, their true enjoyment in the simple things, as well as the great love they have for one another. Just looking at it makes me smile! :)

LongRifle Update...

So after taking a trip to see "our" Dr. Sid, it was determined LongRifle has some sort of virus no meds necessary. She did give us her cell number, home number and pager number so that we could contact her directly (since the answering service didn't work for us this weekend). How cool is that?! Anyway, I had to call her again tonight because when we were getting LongRifle ready for bed we noticed a rash all over her upper torso (Oh no! We thought it was going to be an ER visit all over again). She told us not to worry, it was more than likely Roseola. Great! I suppose with 2 we're just bound to be surrounded by sickness a little more often. Truthfully though, I have no room to complain, Da'Gorgeouses have been super healthy and these minor bumps in the road are nothing compared to what many others (especially parents of micropreemies) are having to deal with!

Thank you God for our health. Amen!

Another First...

Yeah, I know Da'Gorgeouses are 2 years 8 months and yes, today was their first haircut. If you look back at the pics from earlier last year, you'll see that they were still pretty short haired even back in March. So now that they finally have some hair we decided to take them in for a little trim.

Pistol volunteered to go first (after they watched me get my hair trimmed). She loved the whole thing, especially watching it all in the mirror. As a matter of fact, when it was time for her sister's turn she said, "No, I'm not done yet!" LOL! I had to practically drag her off of the chair!

LongRifle was feeling a bit under the weather today, but she sat there just fine and had her hair cut. She's still running a high temp 103. You can see it in her little eyes.

And special thanks to the lovely Ms. J for being so patient and doing such a wonderful job with Da'Gorgeouses first hair cut!

Don't Be Scared....

It all worked out after all...minus the getting the pics posted. We were able to return/exchange our stroller (for the 3rd time), no hassles whatsoever. Da'Gorgeouses LOVED the "feathered dinosaur" exhibit (and it was free)! LongRifle especially loved the dinosaurs and she kept running around looking at all the skeletons, pointing and shouting, "look at the dinosaur, that's a dinosaur" and when we first saw the really HUGE feathered dinosaur they had in the middle of the room (it extended up to the next floor) she held my hand and said, "don't be scared it's just pretend." Pistol laughed, looked up and said, "it's gonna eat me!" and then said, "don't worry it's just pretend." Those girls are a RIOT!!

After the Met. we even had a chance to meet Tia Na-Na and TioMike for dinner at Chinn's. He came out and spoke to the girls and LongRifle told him, "it was delicious!". He still remembers all the pictures we'd show him while they were still in the NICU, and he's just amazed at how much they've grown. All in all it was a wonderful weekend, made even more wonderful by spending it with family!

Another Busy Weekend...

Yeah, we're crazy, we've planned another busy weekend! We took Da'Gorgeouses to their first football game tonight it was the last game between the two rival high schools in our town. Of course the line to get in was long, but since DrillSgt. teaches for one of the schools we were able to just walk right in! Today we're headed to the Fresno Metropolitan Museum in celebration of their grand opening! Da'Gorgeouses are looking forward to viewing the dinosaur exhibit! I'll be back to post some pics from the game, and if I have the chance to post a slide show of Halloween pics (LOL!).

They NEED A TimeOut

So we were invited to a group picnic at the park. Da'Gorgeouses had a wonderful time feeding the ducks, enjoying a snack and playing on the new playground equipment. Luckily for me, Marisa our favorite was there to lend a hand so that I could take a few pics...

She helped them feed the ducks, Pistol had no fear (although Marisa did a wonderful job of protecting her---you should see the one I took of her in her Mr. Miyagi stance).

She listened as LongRifle explained that the "ducks are crazy, they no listen, they need a timeout!"

Poor LongRifle, she was having some serious issues with those ducks (it didn't help that there were some pretty aggressive ones that hissed at her a few times).

I think after awhile they began to concern all of us (except for Pistol, look how cool she is standing there without fear---she seriously tried to swat one away when it got too close--LOL!!).

There's LongRifle trying her best to convince all of us to put those ducks on timeout, she's not even sure she wants that piece of bread Marisa is giving her.

I have only one more thing to add to today's events. As we were loading up the car to head out to the park Pistol asked for her daddy. LongRifle answered that "Papa working." When I told her she was right, Pistol looked over at me and said, "Mama, you worked yesterday." (Okay, maybe it's just a fluke but seriously she's still too young to understand the whole, today, tomorrow, yesterday concept---right?!!).

T-Riffic Day!!

Well, I have to admit we had a TERRIFIC day yesterday. We met my sil & bil downtown at our local Veteran's Day Parade, we were so glad to have them over for a visit! Da'Gorgeouses of course loved all of the extra attention and DrillSgt. and I had a nice time talking with both of them as Pistol and LongRifle went down for their nap. We almost had them convinced to go watch Madagascar2 with us (which was a fun movie btw), but SuperStar had a 3 1/2 hour drive ahead of her. So thanks for coming down for a visit---we hope to see you both again soon!

When we went to watch the movie LongRifle did something that kind of worried me (you know me the parent). I ran into a former (luckily a favorite) student of mine who works there, and while he was walking towards me to say hello, she ran right up to him extended her arms and let him pick her up! WHHHAAATTT??!!! I think the poor kid was more shocked at than I was....we're going to have to keep a real close eye on that little girl!

Pay It Forward...

It went very well the whole guest speaking thing for the RMH. I'd written something all out, made plans with DrillSgt. to have him say it, we got there found out we only had about 2 minutes, and so he just spoke. Turned out pretty well too! I stood there, tears in my eyes, because reliving that story gets to me...it always does, and because here was a chance to help out an organization that we will forever feel indebted to. There were some gasps from the crowd when they viewed the slideshow and when they heard that we stayed there for almost 15 weeks. Anyway, here's the written speech, kind of long and wordy and WAY over the allotted 2-3 minutes we were given---LOL!! (Of course names have been changed to protect the innocent!)
________________________________________________________________

Hi, my name is (DrillSgt.) and this is my wife (MamaChanga). We are here to tell you a little bit about our experience at the Ronald McDonald house.

Prior to the birth of our twin daughters (Pistol) and (LongRifle), we knew very little of the wonderful place called the Ronald McDonald House. We had heard it was a charity of some sort that you could donate to, that it helped the families of children that were hospitalized somehow, but we had no idea it was an actual PLACE! Well, all that all changed on Monday, May 8, 2006

After trying to conceive for 8 ½ years without success we were at last anticipating the arrival of our twin blessings. It had been a fairly uneventful pregnancy, smooth sailing, no morning sickness, no complaints, and we’d just found out that more than likely we were having twin girls at our doctor’s appointment that Thursday. According to the doctor, everything was looking fine. (MamaChanga) had complained of feeling extra tired but the doctor assured us that she was measuring the same as a woman at the end of her 7th month, and had good reason to feel tired! Friday evening she was downright exhausted, but it had been a long workweek, so that too was easy to explain away. On Saturday she began to complain of discomfort and was beginning to think that maybe she was just getting sick, and by early Sunday morning we finally decided to call the doctor’s office. She explained her symptoms to our doctor who just happened to be on call and he suggested we go in to (our local hospital) just to get checked out. He calmly explained that it was probably nothing and she would more than likely be home that same day, but that it would be better to check it out and have a peace of mind. Good thing we went in, because when we got there and they started monitoring, they informed us that she was having contractions every 5 minutes. Our usual cheerful and smiley-faced doctor had a seriously pained look on his face after he checked her, more bad news, she was already dilated to 4 centimeters. He explained that they’d try to stop the contractions, but more than likely we’d be having our girls sometime soon. 23 weeks and 4 days along, just 2 days shy of the beginning of 6th month…it was way too soon…

The medications given to my wife enabled them to hold off the labor for another 24 hours (every hour counts when babies are coming that early) and it was enough time for her to receive the much needed steroid injections and surfactant to help develop their lungs somewhat. On Monday May 8th at exactly 9:54 and 9:55 am (Pistol) and (LongRifle) were born (we had decided on names at 4 am that very morning). They weighed 1.4 and 1.5 lbs respectively, and measured only 10.5 and 12 inches in length. Being only one cell thick, their skin was transparent, and their eyes were still fused shut (Vision is the last sense to develop. In utero, eyelids remain closed until about the 26th week). The two teams from Valley Children’s NICU were there to make all necessary preparations for their transfer to Children’s Hospital in Madera. It took a few hours, but they made sure to bring them the hospital room so we could see them before heading out. She was able to reach in and hold their little hands, and was given a picture of both (goodness how we treasured those pictures!). We were also given a code to call in order to receive information about how they were doing. They told us the first 72 hours would be critical…

We decided right there and then that I would follow the girls, (MamaChanga) still had to recover, but made plans to do whatever she needed to in order to be discharged as soon as possible. So my mother in law and I made the drive to Madera and it was there that the hospital social worker assigned to our case told me about the RMHouse. We would be placed on a waiting list and as soon as an opening came up we would have a room to stay in for $10 dollars a night. This place that was literally steps away, a short walk to visit our girls any time of the day or night that we wanted to. This place that would literally become our HOME for the next 14 (almost 15) weeks.

On May 10th my wife was discharged from the hospital, and although the doctor told her she should go straight home and rest, he also said he knew she’d go straight to Valley Children’s and visit our girls. Little did he know that not only would we go straight there, but that she would only come home 3 times during their almost 15 week stay. We spent the first couple of nights at my sister in laws who lived a little over 30 minutes away, it was closer than the 1 ½ drive from our home, but it was still not close enough to the girls. Although they had made it beyond the 72 hour critical point they were still very sick tiny babies.

On May 12th we received the call that there was a room available at the RMHouse. We gathered what few belongings we’d brought with us and checked in. N. was the first person we met, and her warm and wonderfully caring personality really shone through as she explained the “house rules” and how things operated. During our almost 15 week stay we would get to know N., J. and E. very well. They always had a smile to share, a listening ear, and encouragement to give. They shared our concerns, as well as our joy and celebrations!

It was as perfect as any “home away from home” could be. It provided us with a place to sleep and take care of daily needs, but it was also so much more than that. We were so close by that we made it a routine to visit our girls every morning, afternoon and night. We could stay as long as we wanted by their bedside, reading, talking to them, or just sitting quietly watching them grow. We were able to witness the first time they each opened their eyes, (Pistol’s) first frog push up, as well as a few scary events thrown in (like when she decided to pull out her tubing). If we called at night to check in on our girls and the nurses informed us they were having a rough night, it was easy to get dressed, walk over and sit by their bedside. Staying at the RMHouse provided us with a sense of normalcy. Our situation was very far from normal (as we were watching our babies finish growing right before our very eyes), but we had a place to sleep, a place to shower, meals provided by caring volunteers or a place to cook, and somewhere where our families and friends could stop by and offer their encouragement and support. It was also LongRilfe’s first home. Although she had struggled the most, she beat her sister out of there by 5 days. We brought her home to the RMHouse and waited for Pistol to “catch up”.

During our long stay, we also made some new friendships, other parents of children that were there. One couple in particular from a neighboring town in our area also had a premature infant, born the day after our girls. She was a few weeks farther along, so their stay was slightly shorter, however during the time we were there we became good friends. To this day we still keep in touch with that couple and their beautiful little girl.

So on behalf of my wife and I and our GORGEOUS little girls we would like to thank the RMHouse, its amazing staff, the volunteers, and benefactors for all that you do. You provide a home away from home, as well as support, encouragement, and comfort to all those families just like ours during such a challenging and emotional period in their lives.

Thank you and God bless you!

Twice Blessed...

I've written before about how much I love Da'Gorgeouses pediatrician Dr. Sid. Well, here's another example why. She told me to call and schedule and appointment for their flu shots as soon as they were better. I did but the front desk people said the earliest I could get them in was November 25th, I explained that Dr. Sid had said she wanted them in as soon as possible and the lady responded that the best she could do was November 21st. Since I had no other option I went ahead and took that one. I then told my mom (RN/Grammy) the situation and she suggested that I call and ask to speak to Dr. Sid personally (she works with her) so I did since I had some questions about the medication anyway. So I call but she's gone for the day and won't be able to call me back until Thursday, no rush right, after all anytime BEFORE the 21st would be great. Thursday my mom works so she leaves her a brief note explaining the situation and leaves her my cell number. Dr. Sid called and personally left me a message on voicemail saying I could bring them in Friday at 4:30---WOOHOOO!! But then, get this, yesterday afternoon she has her staff call us because there's been a cancellation and she wants to get the girls in for their flu shots before they can get sick again. Doesn't she ROCK?!!!

So I wake the girls from their nap, call DrillSgt. and tell him to meet me down there ASAP and explain why. We get there, I take the girls down, explain that they're going to be getting a flu shot like Mommy & Daddy and that it might hurt a little. I also give them each a small package of fruit snacks and tell them they can open and eat them RIGHT after they get their shot (btw, Dr. Sid administers the shots herself). Wouldn't you know it worked like a charm? They winced a little bit, said, "I got a shot!" and then proceeded to eat their fruit snacks. They even gave Dr. Sid a big hug and said thank you on their way out, no problem---even DrillSgt. was shocked. She smiled and told me "You are very blessed!" Don't I know it, I'm not only blessed, I'm TWICE blessed!!

You Were There!

So all day yesterday the excitement kept building. I was anticipating the election results knowing that no matter how things turned out it was going to be a monumental event in the history of our country. I wanted to have a voice in that, I wanted to vote, and not only did I want to vote but I wanted to take Da'Gorgeouses along with me so that they could be a part of it too! I talked to them all day, telling them it was Election Day a very important day, Pistol asked, "What's that?" So I explained that it was a day where we were going to vote to elect our next President, and she said, "You gonna vote for me?!" I laughed and told her she was still too little, but that if she ever ran of course I'd vote for her! We waited until DrillSgt. came home, drove down to our polling place and made sure to bring along a lollipop to keep them a little distracted while we voted (it only kind of worked btw). After we were done we all picked up our stickers (even Da'Gorgeouses got one) and headed over to Grammy & Welo's for dinner & to watch the election results as a family. Da'Gorgeouses kept saying, "I VOTED, I voted!!"

Scary Thought!

Goodness gracious, this internet thing has me going crazy!!! Someone is headed over to fix it by Wednesday of next week, I'm not sure I can survive much more of this off again, on again stuff (plus I have things I need to email out)!!

Hope you all had a safe and wonderful Halloween! I'll be back to post pics and share a little of Da'Gorgeouses evening. They really had a great time!
